While flight operations at Zurich Airport move thousands of passengers every day, a project that is as precise as it is safety-critical is running in the background: since March 2025, the pipeline specialists at Josef Muff AG have been working on a new kerosene pressure pipeline at the airport, which stretches for around 700 meters. This pipeline is part of a multi-year renewal project that will be implemented in several phases until 2028.
Highest safety requirements
The pipe is operated at an operating pressure of 50 bar and must withstand a test pressure of 75 bar. The requirements for material, design and inspection are therefore high. Particular attention is paid to the weld seams, which are 100% inspected using X-ray technology. This seamless inspection ensures that the pipeline meets the highest safety standards - particularly important when it comes to supplying fuel in a sensitive airport environment.
Acceptance by the Federal Pipeline Inspectorate (ERI)
As soon as the pipeline is completed, it will be inspected by the Federal Pipeline Inspectorate (FPI). The comprehensive inspection by the supervisory authority emphasizes the safety-relevant importance of this installation - not least because kerosene is subject to special legal requirements as a hazardous substance.
Compact team - clear responsibility
This stage is carried out by a small, specialized team consisting of a chief fitter and one or two experienced welders. This compact team has the necessary expertise, calm and routine required for such work during ongoing flight operations.
Multi-year implementation in stages
This construction phase will be completed by September 2025. It is part of a long-term project that will extend over several years: Further construction stages are planned for 2026, 2027 and 2028. Each stage will renew an important part of the infrastructure - to ensure the reliable and safe operation of the airport.
