Kartonfabrik Deisswil: New floor for SFGB:B in Bernapark

The Deisswil cardboard factory used to be used for die-cutting, but today it is used for teaching and design. Since 2024, the Bern/Biel School of Design (SFGB:B) has had its new location in Bernapark and uses the former industrial building as a training venue. The history of the building remains tangible with load-bearing structures, open concrete surfaces and high ceilings that have been deliberately preserved.

Preserve existing buildings, add function

Some of the existing floor surfaces were retained and functionally refurbished. Where new flooring was required, a jointless cement mortar flooring was used. Calm, robust and technically appropriate, it blends into the building without masking its character. The choice of materials and surfaces was made with restraint and with an eye to what was already there.

A place of learning without staging

The rooms at SFGB:B are clearly structured. Light is directed in a targeted manner, paths are easy to follow. It was not decorated, but designed. The Deisswil cardboard factory remains tangible as a location, not as a backdrop, but as a functional basis. A learning environment has been created here that builds on what already exists, without over-shaping it.
