The steel enclosures at Bern railroad station are a central component of a construction project that combines functionality and aesthetics. Josef Muff AG, a division of the Weiss+Appetito Group, is taking on the challenging task of producing and installing eleven custom-made steel enclosures. This project not only creates a stable connection to Bern railroad station, but also sets new standards in technical precision and craftsmanship.
Precision in figures
At the heart of the project are the eleven steel frames, which are made of 10 mm thick steel. Together they weigh an impressive 55 tons. Ten of the edgings are designed at right angles, while a custom-made version with a special angle enables a direct connection to Bern station. To make installation easier, the steel parts are placed on wooden steel templates. These templates serve as a precise basis for the subsequent concreting and are removed again once the work is complete.
The assembly process:
- Burning and rolling the sheets in different formats
- Structure of the steel core with wooden template
- Stapling and positioning on the wooden molds.
- Welding under special conditions, which places the highest demands on materials and expertise.
- Step-by-step insertion of the sheets to ensure perfect placement.
Teamwork for the highest quality
A team of five to six qualified specialists from Josef Muff AG is responsible for carrying out this project. Thanks to their many years of experience and high level of commitment, they ensure that the project runs efficiently and guarantee first-class quality. The close cooperation with Marti AG enables smooth coordination in all phases of the project.
Mastering challenges:
The production and installation of the steel frames present the team with particular challenges. Each phase of the project requires precise planning and innovative solutions:
- The wooden steel templates allow the sheets to be placed with millimeter precision.
- Welding in a special environment requires not only technical skill, but also the ability to adapt to external conditions.
- The complex geometry of the special design for the connection to Bern station is an example of tailor-made engineering.
Current status: Progress at Taverne Nord
The focus is currently on the Taverne Nord area, where the first steel surrounds are being installed. This section is a key point in the construction process and forms the basis for further work.
Milestone for Bern station
The project began in late summer 2024 and will be completed by 2026. The steel enclosures will not only improve the station's infrastructure, but also create an architectural highlight.
