Bituzim This project in Neuenburg forms the final layer of a ground improvement that has been under construction for about a year. A total of around 16 tons of material was processed on 580 m². Before the Bituzim pavement could be installed, the process involved meticulous work, milling, ball blasting, sealing, and a leveling layer of cast asphalt.
From the existing infrastructure to Bituzim
With such a construction, the actual work begins long before the visible top layer. First, the existing substrate had to be prepared for the following work steps.
This included meticulous work on the existing ground. Subsequently, the concrete was milled. This process created the prerequisite for the further layers and brought the subsoil to the required level for the next step of the work.
After that, the ball was shot through Prima-Sol AG. With that, the mechanical groundwork was complete and the area was ready for further construction.
Especially in a project that spans over 580 m², the individual stages are directly dependent on one another. Each layer builds upon the previous one. Accordingly, the ground was laid out step by step until the actual Bituzim coating was applied.
Sealing with PBD
After the mechanical processing of the substrate, sealing with PBD followed. This began the construction over the prepared base. The sealing formed the next layer before the surface could be further processed with cast asphalt. The sequence of events shows well why the finished finish only shows part of the work performed. Under the later surface are several work steps that were coordinated during the entire project period.
Leveling layer with cast asphalt
The sealing layer was followed by the levelling layer with cast asphalt. This prepared the surface for the final work. The cast asphalt took over the levelling function within the construction process, ensuring a smooth transition between the sealing layer and the later Bituminous coating. A scaffolding system was also part of the project. Only after these preparatory work and the necessary construction had been completed could the final layer be applied.
16 tons of Bitum on 580 m²
The final stage was the Bituzim coating. Around 16 tons of material were used for the 580 m² area.
Bituzim is a mortar compound. In this process, an open-pore bituminous framework is filled with a cement-bound mixture. Bituzim 5A and 5B play a crucial role in the production of this mixture as auxiliary components. Together with water, millite, and cement, the mortar mass is created, which is then injected into the voids of the material.
Especially with a surface of this size, the use of material becomes tangible: Approximately 16 tons went into the final coating on 580 m².
Bituzim as the final step in a one-year project
Between the project start in August 2025 and its completion in August 2026, there were significantly more works than the final installation of the cladding.
First, the existing ground was treated with precision work. This was followed by milling the concrete and the ball blasting by Prima-Sol AG. Subsequently, the PBD seal and the levelling layer were covered with cast asphalt. Together with the support scaffolding, the intended structure was thus created step by step.
Only after that were Bituzim 5A and 5B, water, millite and cement used.
For us, the project in Neuenburg shows in particular how much work is involved under a finished surface. The visible Bituzim coating stands at the end of a long sequence of different work steps and a project time of around twelve months.
